Friends of Bello Belgo

How does development cooperation work anno 2015? What are best practices, which models are outdated? How does the financing of development cooperation work, and how efficient is it done? What is the best, government led or non government led development cooperation? To all these questions, Friends of Bello Belgo tries to define an answer.

Friends of Bello Belgo is at the same time a low-key way to get involved with our organization, and a way to update yourself on the current state of NGO – development cooperation.

Venezuela visit

In July, the Bello Belgo team visited the project in Caracas and it was an amazing experience! Visiting schools, doing workshops with the kids, meeting with the E.C.
team that is also achieving amazing things in Caracas with the MUN project!

We are also proud to announce the expansion of the Embajadas project to 3 new schools in the coming months. This will allow us to actively make a change in the life of up to 80 kids per year!

Bello Belgo welcomes new members!

Last week, the Bello Belgo team welcomed 3 new members to its team: Sander Glas, Bram Vercamer, and Katelijne Bax. They are three people with an excellent background, a great attitude  and a heart for development work joined our young theam of enthusiasts.

Welcome to all of them!

Our new members come from Belgiuim’s  main university cities: Bram is currently studying Global Management at the University of Antwerp, and is a graduate in European Politics there. Katelijne studied Arts, Culture and Law in Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve, and now works in Brussels. And Sander is finishing his law degree at the University of Ghent. All of them share an interest in development cooperation, and have a broad experience in international projects.

Sander, Bram and Katelijne were welcomed in person by Michiel Thiessen, our HR director. They will immediately become active in our organization, working on the different objectives in our Embajadas project, alongside our partners of Embajadores Comunitarios.  You can find the profiles of our new members here.

On top of these three active project members, we welcome Bart Nelissen as our new legal adviser. Bart is a law graduate of the University of Antwerp, a civil cervant and a doctoral student at the KULeuven.

We look forward to working with our new team!

Bello Belgo and Zuiddag visit Venezuela!

A sign of the Caracas government welcomes us in the capital

Another summer, another chance to visit Venezuela. That was our thinking we left with  a group of 4 Bello Belgo members, 6 Zuiddag members and 2 journalists to Venezuela this summer.

It was an amazing trip, in which we did the kick off of the 2012-2013 year – in which we start the Embajadas Comunitarias project – and did an intercultural exchange between Belgian and Venezuelan youth.

The coming days we will post extensively about our trip in Venezuela. Happy reading!

Bello Belgo and Embajadores Communitarios win Zuiddag/Southday competition!

Fantastic news: the joint project ‘Embajadas Communitarias’ of Bello Belgo and Embajadores Communitarios is the 2012 Zuiddag/Southday competition winner!

After months of intense preparation, the project was selected out of 7 other projects to receive the funds and expertise of the 2012 fundraising campaign of Zuiddag/Southday!

Last year, the Zuiddag campaign raised  money in several hundreds of Flemish schools. A similar effort is expected this year. Moreover, the Zuiddag team has experience with similar projects in the past and will be guiding us along the way with their expertise. This means that the project ‘Embajadas Communitarias’ will have the means to directly support over 7 schools and hundreds of school students for the next 5 years.

We will keep you posted on further progress and hope to stay in touch with many of you to make the zuiddag project a big and lasting success!

Should you want more info on ‘Embajadas Communitarias’, then you can watch our grant winning video on  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-T5KfS6K_Uw

Jugamos Footboooool!

After having received  Procom’s teambuilding session last week, it was about time to put this theory into practice. We decided to host a football competition with our kids, with the grateful cooperation of Club Brugge and Ronald Vargas, my favourite team and player!

Many thanks to Mr. Gheysen, the president of the social department of Club Brugge, who took up our project in their unit of  cross-border social projects. This community project , called ‘Allemoale Thope’ (All together), was founded in 2007 with the mission of supporting local and  international social projects that contribute to the integration, development and the improvement of life standards of certain populations that are in need. Club Brugge therefore decided to support the Bello-Belgo project both through financial, logistical and PR-related means.

After drinking tons of water, it was time to say goodbye to our kids. This was our last session with them and saying farewell was not an easy task for us. A big group hug and many handshakes later, the jeep arrived to bring them safely home. They were the reason of our presence. They teached us that NOTHING is impossible.

After the game, it was straight to the next teambuilding event: the Bello-Belgo goodbye bbq to thank all our UCABMUN faculties. While preparing the veggies and making a typical Belgian ‘potatoe-salad’, our Venezuelan counterparts were grilling the puntos, chorizos and morcillas.

Together with some fine Santa Teresa drinks, we ended a very nice barbeque dinner by Venezuelan sunset…

Hasta Luego!
